Unicaja Banco is one of the leading financial institutions in the Spanish banking system, with a clear vocation for proximity service and a focus on retail banking. Following its merger with Liberbank, it has consolidated its position as one of the country’s leading banks. In this process of integration and growth, Unicaja has made a firm commitment to technological innovation and automation as fundamental pillars for transforming its operating model, improving its internal efficiency and offering a more agile, transparent and competitive customer experience.

SUMMARY

Habber Tec accompanied Unicaja in the design and implementation of a global process architecture framework, based on IBM Business Automation Workflow (BAW), as part of its digital transformation strategy. This solution allowed the entity to centralize the management of processes, automate them for integration with different channels and strengthen its architecture with reusable components, templates, control patterns and connection with RPA. All this resulted in greater agility, operational efficiency, reduction of silos and development times, and a more robust integration with its corporate systems.

SITUATION

In 2020, Unicaja decided to incorporate BPM technology as a basis for automating processes and responding to growing operational demands. Initially they implemented three key processes (purchases, appraisals and financial statements), but after the merger with Liberbank it became clear that they needed to review and strengthen their technological architecture.

During an assessment in 2021, it was confirmed that IBM BAW was one of the best solutions on the market for orchestrating BPM processes. However, two clear opportunities for improvement were identified: to increase the number and maturity of processes in use, and to design processes that could be easily integrated with RPA.

VALUE PROPOSAL

Habber Tec, with experience in large banking projects (CaixaBank, Banco Popular and Itaú), was chosen as a technology partner to lead the evolution of Unicaja’s automation platform. The project included specialised consultancy, training, standards definition and the development of a modern process architecture, based on a palette of reusable components, error control patterns, process templates and homogeneous nomenclature.

Key integration capabilities were developed: BPM servicesification, integration with the corporate API Gateway, connection to the robotisation platform via UIPath, and integration with the ELK monitoring tool. In addition, a toolkit for robot orchestration was built to start tasks, query status and control the workload.

Gracias a esta iniciativa, Unicaja Banco ha consolidado una arquitectura sólida y escalable que le permite acelerar la automatización de procesos clave, mejorar la eficiencia de sus operaciones y reforzar su capacidad de integración multicanal. Este avance marca un paso firme hacia la banca del futuro.
